Engineering Manager

Our client is a holding company specialised in the financial and operational management of maritime container terminals. The firm steers every phase in the container terminal lifecycle, from conceptualization, design and construction of new facilities to the conversion of existing facilities. At this moment, the company participates in 20 container terminals worldwide and is involved in the construction or acquisition of an additional 10. Its headquarters and core team is located in Bergen op Zoom (the Netherlands, near the Belgian port of Antwerp)

In support of its ongoing expansion we are currently searching for a Construction Manager (m/f) and an Engineering Manager (m/f).. These are new positions.

Department

The terminal development department heads the development of greenfield facilities from scratch and the conversion of existing (brownfield) operational terminals. Greenfield developments are underway at various stages of the project cycle in Brasil, Togo, France, Turkey and India. Brownfield conversions are ongoing or envisaged in Lithuania, USA and Russia, with other facilities likely to be added to the list in the near future. The department is charged with the entire infrastructure development, comprising conceptual studies, the establishment of business plans, preliminary and detailed engineering, tendering, construction follow-up and subsequently also the specification and purchase of container handling equipment. Both new positions are intended to leverage the department’s development strengths by extending its capabilities in engineering, project controls and construction follow-up. The department is headed by the Chief Technology Officer. Both profiles will report to the Civil Engineering Manager.

Job description Engineering Manager

The Engineering Manager will manage and supervise all engineering efforts in the development of container terminals from conceptual design and preliminary studies into detailed design, design changes during construction and as-built documentation. This implies:

• You will pro-actively manage the early stages of the development of facilities from the head-office.
• You will draft terms of reference and specifications and lead negotiations for engaging the most appropriate engineering consultant(s) for the different phases of the projects.
• You will lead the design efforts for the different developments/conversions and manage both international engineering consultants and the company’s local engineering teams.
• You will participate in the development of appropriate contracting strategies suited to each project’s particularities.
• You will participate in the negotiation, drafting and review of (EPC) contracts for the construction and conversion of port facilities.
• You will establish a basis of corporate best practices in designing container terminal facilities to ensure that pre-construction phases are shortened to the fullest extent possible.

The engineering manager will be based at the company’s headquarters in Bergen op Zoom. A reasonable share of travel is part of the job.

Profile Engineering Manager

• You have a Master's degree in Civil Engineering.
• You have at least 8 years of experience as a design engineer or project design manager with an international engineering consultancy active in the field of maritime construction. Your experience covers quay walls, foundations, heavy duty pavements, networks and the general coordination of designing facilities to meet stringent operational requirements.
• You have experience in defining terms of reference and specifications, a project’s design basis, employer’s requirements and are capable of developing an implementation strategy for each individual project on the basis of its very particularities.
• You have experience in organizing and managing tender processes and have the know-how and capabilities to seek further optimization throughout the project implementation cycle.
• You have hands-on experience in supervising major infrastructure and have the insights to pro-actively manage issues that may arise during construction.
• You are a solid, stress-resistant professional, a real team player and convincing communicator.
• You are capable to match technical expertise with commercial business sense.
• Your interpersonal skills allow you to achieve results with professionals with a cultural background different to yours.
• You have a strong feeling of responsibility.
• Entrepreneurial, self-starter spirit
• You are familiar with Autocad and project management software.
• Finally, you have an excellent command of English, both verbal and written. Additional language skills will definitely be an asset (French, Turkish, Spanish, Portuguese, Russian, …).
